The Supreme Court on
Thursday upheld the Calcutta High Court verdict, which granted bail to former
Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jitendra Narain, in a
gangrape case.
The Bench of Justice
Vikram Nath and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah passed the order on a batch of
petitions challenging the bail granted to the suspended AGMUT cadre IAS officer
by the Port Blair of Calcutta High Court in February, 2023.
The Apex Court,
while granting bail to the former government official, took into account
certain apprehensions raised by the 21-year-old survivor and directed the Union
Territory administration to deal ‘adequately’ with any complaint made by her.
It further directed
the trial court to expedite the trial and the respective parties to fully
extend their cooperation.
