Supreme Court refuses early hearing against HC verdict of Hijab ban
case in Karnataka [25.3.2022]
NEW DELHI: 25.3.2022, Thursday, The Supreme Court
on Thursday refused an early hearing on the pleas challenging the verdict which
dismissed the petitions seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom,
saying it is not part of the essential religious practice in the Islamic faith.
Muslim girl student Aishat Shifa, one of the petitioners, has requested an
urgent hearing of her appeal against the Karnataka HC judgment upholding the
ban on hijab in schools and colleges.
CJI N V Ramana refused the
early hearing and said, "Examinations have nothing to do with hijab... do
not sensationalise the things." The apex court also did not entertain
solicitor general Tushar Mehta's attempt to intervene and make his point on
behalf of the Karnataka government.
The Karnataka high court had
dismissed the petitions filed by a section of Muslim students from the
Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi, seeking permission to wear a
Hijab inside the classroom.
