The Bombay High Court ordered the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to replace a Mumbai resident's demonetised notes worth Rs 1.6 lakh with new currency notes.

24.2.2022, Thursday, Mumbai :

Six years after demonetisation, a division bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to replace Rs 1.6 lakh of old notes belonging to a Mumbai resident.

Justices Gautam Patel and Madhav Jamdar, issued the order on Tuesday in response to a petition filed by Kishor Sohoni, a resident of Mumbai's Dombival area. In a case of cheating where Sohoni was the complainant, a Kalyan magistrate in March 2016 had directed the accused to deposit Rs 1.6 lakh with the local police station.

On November 8, 2016, the Centre announced the implementation of demonetisation. Despite Sohoni's request to the magistrate for an order allowing him to collect the money before the December 31, 2016 deadline for exchanging old notes, she only granted it on March 20, 2017.
