Supreme Court : Refuses to suspend NRC exercise ahead of elections [06-02-2019]

New Delhi :-- The Supreme Court has rejected, for now, demands by the central and Assam governments to suspend the work on the National Register of Citizens (NRCNSE 2.22 %) in the state for five weeks ahead of polls.

Both central and state governments cited political atmosphere that becomes charged during elections and lack of sufficient personnel to provide security simultaneously for NRC work and elections, to seek suspension of the process. They want the work to be stopped till the date of voting from two weeks prior to the deadline to withdraw nominations — the period when electioneering becomes intense.

“We are not extending the deadline beyond July 31, 2019,” a bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi said, referring to the date the SC has set for completing the process to update the NRC. But it then adjourned the matter for further hearing in the first week of March, after the attorney general said there was a genuine problem. Earlier, the court came down heavily on the government for what it said raising excuses to delay the process to update the register.
